The NDU was among 14 private universities to be granted autonomy at the Jubilee House where the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah received the charter for the NDU on behalf of the Ghana Armed Forces. The charter would afford all major schools under the Ghana Armed Forces to award diploma and degree certificates, drawing on the mandate to have a positive impact on Ghana’s military preparedness as well as contribute to international peacekeeping efforts. With the new status, the NDU has been well positioned to play a critical role in training personnel in defence to address the evolving challenges related to peace and security. Following the grant of the presidential charter on Thursday 19 December 2024, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), National College of Defence Studies (NCDS) and Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC) would operate as National Defence University (NDU).
