The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has on Thursday 9 October, 2025 convened a seminar for the Military High Command at the Command Officers Mess, Burma Camp ahead of the implementation of the GAF Gender Policy.

The seminar, themed “From Policy to Practice: Institutionalizing Gender Mainstreaming in GAF,” focused on key areas such as gender mainstreaming, sexual harassment and abuse, modalities for promoting gender-inclusive peacekeeping involvement, as well as enhancing interactive responsiveness on gender-related issues.

The Gender Policy Advisor to the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Group Captain Theodora Adjoa Agornyo, expressed gratitude to the leadership of GAF for its continued commitment to advancing gender equality and inclusion within the military. She emphasized that the participation of the Military High Command demonstrates the dedication of GAF to building a modern, professional and gender-responsive force rooted in fairness, equity and operational excellence.

She stressed the need to translate the policy into practical action and integrate a broader perspective into daily practices.

She stated that GAF, as an institution built on discipline, merit and mission effectiveness, must ensure that every officer and soldier, regardless of gender contributes meaningfully and benefits equally from the opportunities and responsibilities of service.

In his remarks, the CDS, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, commended the progress GAF has made in gender mainstreaming at both national and international levels. He acknowledged that although the GAF was originally structured with men in mind, it demands a more inclusive approach.

He called for greater cohesion and collaboration among all genders and reaffirmed his commitment to the Gender Policy, calling for its gradual and strategic implementation.

The three service chiefs pledged their support for the implementation of the GAF Gender Policy.
