The President and Commander in Chief (C-in-C) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has promoted the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), General Thomas Oppong-Peprah to the rank of a 4-Star General on Friday 3 January 2023. The President made the announcement during his final State of the Nation Address (SONA) at the Parliament House, Accra, where he indicated that the promotion formed part of the government's plan to build capacity as well as quicken the pace of retooling security agencies to ensure readiness towards emerging security threats. The promotion which falls in line with the government’s initiative to expand GAF and other security agencies saw the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) promoted to the rank of a Lieutenant General, the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) to the rank of Vice Admiral and Chief of Air Staff (CAS) to Air Marshal. Relatedly, the President mentioned that the territorial borders of the country has been well safeguarded regardless of the rising level of insurgencies in the West African sub-region. He acknowledged the importance of peace and security as the most important area of every nation stating that the continuous peace and stability in the country was as a result of the excellence of GAF and other security agencies
