The Austrian Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Alexander Schallenberg has visited the National Dog Academy at Dzorwulu, Accra, on Friday 13 September 2024. The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral relations between Ghana and Austria and to operationalise an Austrian embassy in Ghana. Mr Schallenberg commended the Provost Marshal and his team for their excellent work, expressing his enthusiasm for the display of dogs donated to the academy. He hoped for a stronger partnership with Ghana and extended his wish for the collaboration to include countries such as Belgium and Germany, aiming to develop a more robust force. The General Staff Officer Grade 1 (GSO1), Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Nii Okai Quaye, briefed the minister and his entourage on the academy’s history and current state. He revealed that the National Dog Academy currently has 30 trained adult dogs, with four puppies undergoing training, scheduled for deployment to Tamale. Lt Col Quaye highlighted how military dogs, including those provided by Austria, are utilised in various operations, such as explosive detection, VVIP vehicle inspections, and drug and counterfeit currency detection.
