6 Garrison has organized breast cancer awareness campaign reflecting the importance of screening and early detection under the theme: “Early Detection Saves Life; Join the Fight” on Saturday 21 October, 2023. During the programme, the Air Force Base Commander, Air Commodore (Air Cdre) Joshua Mensah-Larkai urged both men and women to join the fight against breast cancer since it has not received the needed attention in society. He suggested that GAF incorporates breast cancer screening into the medical examinations of troops before deployment and potential recruits. The programme which was held simultaneously across two locations; the Nyohini Camp and the Airborne Force Medical Reception Service (ABF MRS) commenced with a health walk through some principal streets in the Tamale Metropolis. At both locations, women were educated on the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, risk factors, preventive measures and treatment options available. In all, about 300 women including soldiers, Defence Civilian Staff, wives of soldiers and some civilian women from the surrounding communities were screened. Prior to the event, medical officers from 6 Garrison and Air Born Force (ABF) Medical Reception Stations went on a media engagement tour at some radio stations to create the awareness on breast cancer.
