The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has commenced activities marking the 25th Anniversary of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 at Burma Hall on Wednesday 5 November 2025.
The event, held under the theme “Embracing the Future of Women, Peace, and Security for a Gender-Responsive Ghana Armed Forces”, aims to assess the impact of UNSCR 1325 and redefine its relevance to gender, peace and security within Ghana and the West African sub-region.
The UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana, His Excellency Zia Choudhury applauded female GAF officers for their remarkable contributions toward breaking structural barriers in peace support operations. He also recognised the first African woman Force Commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, Major General Anita Asmah and the 2024 United Nations Military Gender Advocate, Squadron Leader Sharon Mwinsote Syme for their exceptional achievements.
The Deputy Chief of Staff (Administration) at the Presidency, Nana Oye Bampo Addo commended the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong and GAF for their professionalism, integrity, and transformation over the years. She encouraged the Armed Forces and other security agencies to adopt gender-friendly policies and ensure fair promotion opportunities for women in service.
Lt Gen William Agyapong highlighted the strides of GAF in promoting women empowerment, leadership, and inclusion, particularly in peacekeeping operations. He emphasised the need to further advance the participation of women in peace processes and safeguard their protection in conflict and post-conflict environments.
The Gender Policy Advisor to the CDS, Group Captain Adjoa Agornyo called for increased female representation at all decision-making levels within the Armed Forces to strengthen conflict prevention, management, and resolution. She also expressed appreciation to partners and sponsors supporting the implementation of UNSCR 1325, including the United Nations, Government of Canada, Elsie Initiative, Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, GAF, and the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.
